Warriors Win Inaugural MN Senior World Series!

Sunday, September 16

In what was billed as a tournament to crown a true 35-over state champion, Woodbury went 4-1 to capture the championship and win the coveted Herb Carneal Memorial Trophy in the inaugural edition of the Minnesota Senior World Series.

Woodbury started with victories over two teams from the Federal League, but then had to face a very familiar opponent: the Burnsville Bulldogs. The Warriors and Bulldogs had split 2 games in the regular season and 2 games in the Classic League tournament and faced each other again on Saturday afternoon in the winner bracket final at the World Series.

Woodbury started Steve Schneider who had thrown a 1-hit shutout in Woodbury's opening game the previous weekend and four innings earlier in the day. Schneider was as dominant as ever, giving up only 3 hits and going the distance in a 9-0 Warrior victory. That left Woodbury waiting in the championship game while Burnsville had to win one more to get another crack at the Warriors.

After beating host Loretto, Woodbury's second round victim, Burnsville and Woodbury squared off again in the championship, with Burnsville needing two victories while the Warriors only needed one. Rick Forrest started for the Woodbury and was nearly flawless, but back to back doubles in the 5th inning were all that the Bulldogs would need to claim victory, as Woodbury's bats went silent. Burnsville's victory setup the final showdown between the two teams.

In the finale, Woodbury went with a fresh Kent Rogers on the mound, while Burnsville's starter from the first game, Bob Walfoort, continued. The Warriors got to Walfoort early, scoring 4 runs in the second inning, keyed by a clutch 2-run single by Dan Lundgren. Rogers and Doug Berfeldt also had RBIs in the inning to give Woodbury all they would need, and Rogers cruised past a spent Bulldog lineup.

The Warriors were presented with the Herb Carneal Memorial Trophy and Schneider was voted tournament MVP following the championship game. His line for the tournament: 18 IP, 0 ER, 3 W, 25 K.
